Labour
Representation Committee
By Terry McCarthy
As a keen supporter and volunteer for John McDonnell's
leadership campaign I am baffled at the reluctance of the Labour
Representation Committee to reconvene; anybody with a basic understanding
of politics knows the need for analysis.
The next general meeting will not take place until
1st November one year after the highly-successful conference which
endorsed John's leadership bid.
Important issues have to be discussed now:
- why was the campaign such a shambles?
- The failure of John's own campaign group of MPs
to mobilise 100 per cent behind John.
- The failure of the rank-and-file trade unionists
to even bother to vote and the majority of the 8% that did bother
did not support John (and John's defence of his poor showing being
solely at the hands of Derek Simpson is Infantile).
Given that Gordon-Brown has now driven a coach and
horses through the bands and prescription rule the LRC must in turn
change its rules in relation to other organisations, parties and
individuals.
If the LRC is to be a catalyst for a non-sectarian
left groups and individuals who support socialism in the labour
party it will have drastically change its organisational structure.
